You can save several hundreds of dollars a year, for example, by changing your own oil and air filters. More advanced car owners can refresh the cooling system and install brake pads. If you decide to do these things on your own, make sure you dispose of all waste in accordance with the laws of your state. In spite of the ability to do some regular car maintenance at home, the average car owner will still have to consult a professional from time to time. It is quite challenging to try to save money and do what is right for your car. If you are lucky, you have a relationship with a mechanic you trust. You know that if he or she tells you that something needs to be fixed, it really should be. A trusted mechanic will tell you the things that should be given priority, and those that can wait for months or years. He or she also will never undergo an unexpected car repair without conferring with you first either. Many consumers, however, do not have a regular mechanic and utilize service shops at dealers or big chain retailers for maintenance and car repair. They often do not see the same mechanic twice. Knowing whether an unexpected car repair suggestion is needed can be difficult in this case. The best way to feel empowered to make the right decisions is to do a little research. Before you even take your car in for an appointment, know the repair and maintenance history of your car. Have a list of the things you expect to be included on any scheduled maintenance, and keep it handy when you receive a call from the mechanic as he or she works on your car. Write down any additional items being suggested for car repair, then research those items on the internet or your manual. Lastly, ask questions. Ask which repairs can wait, which are dire and why.
